Microsoft published a video showing details about the interface details of Windows 8 (Eight Traits of Great Metro Apps). It's 90 minutes long but definitely worth watching since Windows 8 is still going to be a major player on computers.

The video is too full with interesting things. So I am going to highlight only a few remarkable things. At the bottom you will find my personal notes which I took while watching the video. You might be interested in them too.

Vor einer Woche hatte ich meinen zweiten Twittergeburtstag. Den habe ich offenbar etwas verschlafen. Aber so viel hat sich seit meinem letzten Twitter-Geburtstag nicht geändert. Hier ein kleines Update.

Das Glanzstück an Schauspielkunst - im Original ein Theaterstück von Anthony Shaffer - wird vor allem von den hervorragenden Protagonisten getragen: der gewohnt wunderbare Michael Caine und ein Jude Law, der mir erstmals vor der Kamera wirklich gut gefallen hat. In einer fantastischen Kulisse entwickelt sich die spannende und geniale Geschichte ohne Spezialeffekte und sonstigem Schnickschnack in einer grandiosen Art und Weise.

Eine technische Ausnahme ist der eingesetzte Do-what-I-want-Fernbedienungsknopf von Apple, der subtil die jeweilige Dominanz, um die es im Grunde genommen während der ganzen Handlung geht, manifestiert.

Unterstrichen wird das manipulative Meisterstück von Regisseur Kenneth Branagh durch eine zurückhaltende und schlau eingesetzte Musik. Die Dialoge sind spontan und beinhalten oft eine tiefsinnige und witzige Pointe, die sich oft erst beim zweiten Mal dem Zuseher entpuppt.

Ich möchte mich auf die zwei Artikel von der gestrigen Ausgabe beziehen:

»Hacker: Schwer zu fassen, kaum zu bestrafen«

»Das „Pony“ schlägt wieder zu: Kundendaten das GIS gehackt«

Abgesehen davon, dass in den Artikeln wiederum »Hacker« mit »Cracker« verwechselt werden, kommt der meiner Meinung nach wichtigste Aspekt mit keinem Wort vor.

Today Google announced the new social stategy and services named Google+. Here is a very cool summary of the videos and the teamwork of the components. But it concerns me.

In Graz wird gerade heftig geworben. Die Energie Steiermark AG und der Verbund will mitten im Grazer Stadtgebiet ein Staukraftwerk in der Mur errichten. Dazu sind umfangreiche Maßnahmen notwendig, die die Lebensqualität und das Aussehen der Stadt langfristig beeinflussen.

Ich stehe dazu, dass wir mehr Kraftwerke benötigen werden. Ebenso bin ich aber auch der Meinung, dass nicht nur neue Kraftwerke notwendig sein müssen, sondern auch die Möglichkeiten der Energieverbrauchssenkung ausgeschöpft werden sollen. Weiters ist meiner Meinung nach zu beachten, dass Graz nicht bedeutend an Lebensqualität einbüßen darf, nur um Profit zu machen.

Google Mail (GMail) offers the feature to nest a new label (Google-Gmail-speak for "tag") under another one. You get there following this path:

Gmail > Mail settings > Labels > "Create new label" > "Nest Label under:"

With this feature, you can define a label "sports" and nest another label "volleyball" under it. Then you get "sports" and "sports/volleyball" respectively.

Unfortunately Google has mixed two different concepts which results in bad usability: wrong behavior expectance.

Since GLT11 where a GNU Emacs session turned into an open show and tell I am aware of the existance of Org-mode. As you might already know, I was using GNU Emacs and later on switched to (g)vim. Just because of Org-mode, I am now using GNU Emacs again. And I do think that it's woth to learn GNU Emacs just because Org-mode.

So what is this Org-mode anyway and how can it help you?

git-annex is using the powerful distributed version control system git as a distributed file system for synchronizing data bewteen several hosts or (external) data storages like USB-sticks, backup hard disks or even remote servers using SMB or ssh. Unlike git, git-annex can also handle very large files.

Besides the usual advantages of such a solution (easy remote backup, access all historical versions, working with other people on the same files, …) git-annex is able to get you even more benefit for your workflows. On the walkthrough page you'll notice the sheer beauty of this solution.
