Wie du vielleicht schon weißt, habe ich im November in Vancouver Tim Bray getroffen. Damals war er noch Angestellter von SUN. Seit einigen Wochen arbeitet er für Google und kümmert sich als "Developer Advocate" um deren Smartphone-Betriebssystem Android.

Tim hat am 15. März in seinem Blogeintrag über den Wechsel zu Google einen Aufruf miteingefügt, dass man ihm doch gute Infos zum Thema Android zukommen lassen soll. Sogleich habe ich ihm eine Email geschickt mit ein paar nützlichen Android-Dingen.

Ich war sehr erstaunt, dass Tim mir doch tatsächlich auf mein Email geantwortet hat. Ich dachte, der wird sowieso mit Mails zugemüllt werden, da wird meines untergehen. Doch dabei ist es nicht geblieben. Offenbar hat Tim von meinem Standard-Email-Footer den URL zu meinem Blog hier ausprobiert und ist auf einige interessante Artikel zum Thema mobile computing und Android gestoßen.

Es entwickelte sich in Folge ein intensiver Emailaustausch zwischen uns und Ende letzter Woche kam dann ein unverschämtes Jobangebot für mich: Tim sucht einen Mitarbeiter, der sich nicht um Codezeilen, sondern um allgemeine Belange rund um die Themen Usability, Featuresets von AOSP, strategische Weiterentwicklung in Richtung PIM und Groupware kümmert.

On march 17, I started a (german) call for volunteers in order to get data on typing speed of mobile input methods. I wanted to get accurate numbers to compare different input methods of nowadays mobile systems. The volunteers were asked to type a german text from Goethe (which consists of 107 words) on their mobile devices. They should measure the time spent while typing and send it along with some background data about them and their devices.

I've got submissions of 15 volunteers (2 women, 13 male) resulting in 38 measurements on approximately 20 different devices. Those values also contain hand-written samples as well as some full-size computer keyboard samples. Some samples provided comparable measurements of the same person on the same device but using different input methods.

As I recognized, the blog software seems to have a problem with comments. Although I explicitly allow comments without confirmation (and try to delete Spam manually) I just found many comments in the queue for "please do confirm". Most of the recently posted comments did it to their articles (without the need for confirmation) but some were in the approve-queue for about one month or so. Please do excuse me for not checking it earlier!

Ich frage mich schon selber seit längerer Zeit, wie schnell ich denn auf meinen diversen mobilen Geräten Text eingebe. So im Vergleich. Also hab ich mich mal selber gebenchmarkt, wie man so schön sagt. Bevor ich aber meine Ergebnisse hier veröffentliche, finde ich es interessant, auch Vergleichswerte anderer Personen mitzuberücksichtigen.

Wieso wundert es mich auf der einen Seite, auf der anderen wieder nicht, dass Microsoft mit Windows Phone 7 den Müll von vorhandenen Windows Mobile Anwendungen komplett über den Haufen wirft?

OK, eigentlich sind es zwei Dinge: erstens hab ich mir bei der Präsentation von Windows Phone 7 schon gedacht, dass das mit vorhandener Code-Basis inkompatibel sein muss. Und zweitens finde ich es auf der anderen Seite durchaus mutig von Microsoft, alles existierende wegzuwerfen. Ein sehr, sehr großer Vorteil von Windows Mobile ist somit Geschichte. Auch sie fangen von Null an. Jede Windows Anwendung für den Mobileinsatz muß komplett neu programmiert werden. Tausende von Produktlinien werden abrupt abgebrochen. Aus.

Good news for PIM people like me: Agendus is coming to WebOS and Android.

As I already stated in my task management blog entry with Android (section "On finger gesture devices"), I had the strong feeling, that finger gesture based devices can not provide the same interface and featureset as stylus based devices.

On the mailinglist of Pimlical there was a message from a user, who describes his first impressions with his Palm Pre. Besides other problems he reported, he wrote about problems using DateBk6 (a classic Palm PDA software) in his Palm Pre emulation for old-style PalmOS applications.
